This workshop will focus on learning the basic skills of motivational interviewing to support client resolution of ambivalence towards change, keeping the responsibility for change with the client (and not on the counselor).

We’ll begin with the stages of change to support beginning “where the client is at”. We’ll cover OARS: asking Open ended questions, Affirming the client’s experience, Reflecting client statements and meaning, and Summarizing the client interview. We’ll then move to the skills of expressing empathy, developing discrepancy between client’s values and their current behavior, rolling with client resistance thus avoiding direct confrontation and arguments, and enhancing self efficacy. Lastly, we’ll utilize scaling to help clients identify and overcome barriers to change.

This workshop will cover both addiction and mental health case studies.

OBJECTIVES:
  1. Participants will learn and practice OARS, Scaling, and basic skills of MI.
  2. Participants will learn and practice expressing empathy, developing discrepancy, rolling with client resistance, and avoiding direct confrontation.

Lunch, snacks, coffee, water, and tea are all included!

We look forward to seeing you there!
